Modernizing Colwin’s Digital Presence Through Purpose-Built Web Design

Colwin Electrical Group is a British Columbia-based electrical contractor with more than four decades of experience delivering electrical services across the Lower Mainland, Fraser Valley, Vancouver Island, and beyond. In 2016, their low-voltage division was spun off into its own company and website, Colwin Connect, focusing on data, security, CCTV, and integrated communications solutions.

Both companies share ownership, values, and a commitment to client service. Their digital presence needed to reflect that relationship while still giving each brand room to speak clearly to its own market.

The Problem

As both companies evolved, their websites had not kept pace. The existing sites were outdated and no longer reflected where Colwin was as a business or how they wanted to present themselves to the market.

The day-to-day reality of managing them had also become a problem. Routine updates and content changes were fragile enough to break the sites, meaning even the smallest task required a developer to step in. What should have been simple had become a recurring cost and an ongoing frustration.

The Solution

Ballistic Arts offered Website Design & Development

The Ballistic Arts web team worked with Colwin to design and build two new websites that shared a cohesive look and feel while maintaining each company’s distinct identity and messaging.

To make sure the design direction felt right before the full build began, we presented multiple concepts early in the process. This gave the Colwin team a clear sense of the visual range available and helped narrow the style that best reflected both brands. From there, we developed a full high-fidelity prototype that the client could interact with and review before a single line of code was written.

The final sites were built on WordPress, giving Colwin a stable, secure, and easy-to-manage platform their team could confidently update without needing a developer for every routine task.

Key Success Factors

One Cohesive Brand Direction

Colwin Electrical Group and Colwin Connect serve different markets but share the same ownership and values. By designing both sites around a unified visual language while preserving each company’s distinct messaging and identity, both brands now present themselves with consistency and confidence.

Manageable Without a Developer

A website is only as useful as it is maintainable. By building both sites on WordPress, Colwin’s team gained a stable, secure platform they could update and manage on their own, without needing a developer for routine tasks.

Built Around How the Team Works

This project was not only about a visual refresh. Colwin needed a practical system that would reduce friction after launch. The new websites give each company a stronger public-facing presence while making the backend easier for the internal team to manage.

That meant pairing a polished frontend with an admin experience that could support routine updates, content changes, project additions, and long-term maintenance without turning every edit into a development request.

The Results

The final deliverables were two polished, modern websites built to reflect where both companies are today, designed with their teams in mind as much as their clients.

Colwin came away with sites that not only resonated with their current branding and business vision, but that they could actually manage themselves. Routine updates, content changes, and day-to-day maintenance no longer require outside help, giving the team back both time and confidence in their digital presence.

Why It Works

Every single decision made in this project was a direct response to the needs of the Colwin team:

Two related companies needed to feel connected without becoming interchangeable.

  • What we did: We created a shared visual system that gave both sites a cohesive family feel while preserving distinct messaging for Colwin Electrical Group and Colwin Connect.

The team needed confidence in the design direction before committing to the full build.

  • What we did: We presented multiple concepts, narrowed the direction collaboratively, and developed a high-fidelity prototype the client could review and interact with before development began.

Routine updates needed to stop becoming developer-dependent tasks.

  • What we did: We built the sites on WordPress with maintainability in mind, giving the Colwin team a secure CMS they could use for day-to-day content management.

The new sites needed to reflect where Colwin is now, not where the old websites had left them.

  • What we did: We modernized the presentation, clarified each company’s positioning, and built a digital presence that better matches the quality, scale, and professionalism of the businesses today.
